Some of the examples of catastrophic injury include:

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

This term is used to describe the result of a sudden physical force that causes damage to the brain. Symptoms of TBI can include concussion, seizure, dizziness, headache, inability to concentrate, loss of memory, and in some cases anxiety and depression. The injury occurs when the momentum of the brain causes it to impact against the skull, which is smooth on the outside but has protruding bony structures and ribbing on the inside. Some of the physical signs that may occur are decrease in muscle control, loss of motor function, paralysis, seizures, weakness, sensory losses and difficulty speaking or swallowing. It is important to receive the proper testing to establish any long term damage.

Spinal Cord Injury (SCI)

This trauma is damage to the spinal cord that results in the loss of function such as mobility or feeling. The spinal cord does not need to be severed in order for a loss of function to occur. There are two types of spinal cord injuries, complete and incomplete. Complete means there is no function or feeling at and below the injury site. Incomplete means that some functions or feeling may be felt below the injury site. Usually, there is swelling of the spinal cord and after days or weeks as the swelling subsides some function may be recovered, sometimes even as late as 18 months after the injury for incomplete injuries. However, only a small portion of individuals recover all function. In complete spinal injuries the regaining of any function may be minimal to impossible.

Broken Bone Injuries

Broken bones may require surgery or implantation of metal plates or screws. Due to their severity, they can render someone unable to work for months at a time. Bones do not always heal properly, leading to additional medical procedures, or permanent disability. In children, fractured bones can significantly influence his or her growth and development.

Orthopedic Injuries

These relate to the bones and the connective tissue that connects muscle to bones, such as tendons and ligaments. Surgery is often necessary to repair the damage. This can result in long periods out of work and significant medical bills. Surgery cannot always restore the victim completely. There is often some remaining disability to repaired tendons or ligaments.

Bulging and Herniated Disk Injuries

Disk injuries often result in an impingement of the spinal cord. These back injures can be life threatening if they risk serious damage to the spinal cord. At minimum, they often cause severe back pain and/or a loss of feeling in the victim’s limbs. Major surgery by a neurosurgeon can provide relief. However, significant scarring, substantial medical bills, and a long recovery time should be expected.
